Description
February 22nd, 2015 was the day of the accident. I was heading back to Stockton after a wonderful birthday dinner with my family. The pavement was still wet from the snow that fell the night before, the temperature dropping more and more as the hours passed. I drove along the back roads, my headlights just barely lighting the way. As I was coming down Moss Mill Road I suddenly hit a puddle. My adrenaline was now pumping as I began to swerve into the opposite lane. I hit the breaks and turned the wheel making the car do a 360. It’s as if time completely slowed down. I was heading in the direction of a telephone pole. Before I knew it, I had made impact. My ears popped from the passenger’s side air bag. My car was totaled, the whole trunk now completely gone. Though I was lucky to walk away with no physical scars, the accident had a significant effect. I now have fear of being behind the wheel.
This event prevented me from exploring new places. As time went on, I realized I couldn’t let my fear continue to put my life on hold. For the past couple of months, with my camera at my side, I visited new places and documented my journey.
“Breaking Boundaries” is a series of digital photographs that illustrates both the struggles of getting comfortable behind the wheel again and the outcome of finally overcoming that fear. The photographs are presented in pairs, one for the beginning of the journey and one for the end. I decided to utilize this idea, to put an emphasis on the anxiety and fear I had of getting behind the wheel and the reward of reaching a destination.
All images were taken with a Nikon DSLR camera and printed with an Epson Inkjet printer.
