Solitude, 2019
Throughout my life I experienced times when everything is happening at once and I am completely enveloped in that situation. There are moments when feel like I need a break, mind and body simultaneously. In these photographs I want to replicate a feeling of solitude. These moments represent any time, especially during chaos, when I seek to shut out the surrounding world for that one moment; to contemplate what has happened, what is happening, or what might happen in my life. The idea of solitude is not intended as a representation of a negative or lonely experience, it is the choice to be alone.
I placed my subjects in locations that are familiar, where I might go to escape distractions, to think, or to contemplate in a quiet setting. The subjects are in spaces that allow for solitude and quiet reflection on what their lives might be like in that moment. Some locations are well lit, others are dark and cluttered, but all offer some small insight into why the subject chose that place. I tried to choreograph the light, objects, and people when staging these photographs to resemble the atmosphere I have experienced in these moments.
My work has been influenced by artists such as Gregory Crewdson and Cindy Sherman. Crewdson creates a stillness in his photographs that is familiar, I am also interested in stillness in my photographs.
The photographs were taken with Ilford Delta 400 black and white negative film, on a Nikon FM10 camera. The negatives were then enlarged on Ilford Multigrade RC Warmtone paper. I wanted to use warmtone paper to help encourage the idea of solitude as a more comforting state of mind.
