Description

I am interested in the relationship between light and space. Light is variable, constantly changing, and therefore transforming the way it illuminates the space. The photographs are a representation of my view of particular spaces as places of domesticity, a place to feel secure. These spaces are significant to me - the warmth and coolness of the light represents and recreates a state of mind. While photographing, I watched how the light would move throughout a space, changing the character of the room as time passed. I waited for the moments when I recognized the embodiment of light as a sensibility, or a feeling of ease within these spaces.

One of the influences in solidifying my concept was American photographer Minor White, who once said: ?One should not only photograph things for what they are but what else they are?. These photographs are more than just familiar spaces I?ve been in, they?re a representation, through the use of light, reflecting my understanding of comfort in domestic spaces other than my own. Domestic Mirage is a series of photographs made in interiors that give the illusion of places that allow me to feel as if they were such based on my experiences there.

Alfred Stieglitz, in his series Equivalents, photographed clouds for eight years to convey his thoughts, emotions, and experiences from his life: ?seize the familiar and give it new meanings, a special significance by the mark of a personality.? Stieglitz concept of clouds being a representation of his experiences and emotions?I have photographed light filling a space to represent the illusion of domesticity.

All images were photographed in 2018 and the beginning of 2019 with a Nikon D5200 and were produced as 14x20 inch pigment inkjet prints. The series of photos were captured using natural lighting and yellow lighting to juxtapose the contrast in how warm or how cool light makes a space feel, while still able to correlate representations of domesticity. The spaces are photographed in a straightforward manner and look as though they?ve been lived in for a long period of time. Despite the atmospheric differences, these images are unified by light as a representation of domestic sensibilities.
