Description

FACES, 2017-2018

Atlantic City has been the place I have called home for past five years. I have spent all of my early adulthood growing and learning from employment in casinos and the service industry of Atlantic City. This portfolio is comprised of portraits of the people that are significant to me as well as people I encountered along my journey.
My intention was to photograph men and women who have an indigenous relationship to the city. My work is a representation of a specific portion of local life and the connection between the subject and their surroundings. Intentionally not in focus, each portrait was taken at a location with an association to the subject. The size of the portraits and the shallow depth of field are part of my efforts to pay close attention to the subject’s faces. I spoke to the subjects as I was photographing them. I learned their stories about Atlantic City while I shared my own experiences. The engagement I had with each person helped me to produce work that reflects those conversations. The photographs are made with a digital SLR type camera using natural and artificial light sources. The prints are pigment inkjet made with the Epson SC8000 printer.
Throughout the past seven years, my vision of Atlantic City has evolved from just a casino driven money pit to a home with strong local communities. Using my photography and my passion for where I work and live I created a series of portraits that encompasses the community, culture, and personal connections that I have to Atlantic City.
